A Place Called Vertigo
Parts of 2005-04-28 & 2005-04-29

This is one of those where I understand why some people prefer AUD's over soundboards. It's a really rough recording and the levels are everywhere. Sometimes Bono's a bit distant, the other side of the room thing, other times he's in your face, practically sweating the words out on your head. Drums are loud, back vocals are loud. And there's the tip-off right there.

When it comes to soundboard sources, it can mean a few things. We like to think it's this magical connection between the FOH (main) mixer and a top quality DAT, CD burner, or a nice reel. Even a cassette is preferrable to some of the other options: a side-feed, monitor or ALD mix. Out of these, the side-feed could be the best of the three, possibly even better than an FOH, depending on it's purpose and destination.

The worst possible of these is an ALD, or Assisted Listening Device. This is akin to a Sanitation Engineer really being a Janitor. ALD is an in ear monitor system, of which many bigger acts use today. For U2, and mostly Bono, it means you can move anywhere you want; top of the stacks, right stage, center stage, back stage, from the tour bus, in the can; and you'll hear the same mix everytime, in your earbuds. "Can you hear me now? Good!"

So this mix is probably Bono's mix, what he is hearing during the course of the show. Sometimes it's a decent mix, other times things are missing, or noises come in that shouldn't. It's getting it's own feeds from other places, so it has the ability to be both incomplete and superfluous to the actual FOH mix. It's rough.

And apparently it's sourced from 2 shows to make a complete single show. Don't ask, 'cause I haven't a clue as to why. I just grabbed it, smacked it upside the 13, and posted it here for y'all.

It's been Eq'd, compressed quite a bit to even out the rough edges, spread, enhanced and maximized. I've enjoyed listening to it, so it must sound pretty good.

Enjoy!

MATRIX

Source 1: ALD
Source 2: AUD

Not much to say about it: nice show, nice sources.

There's some confusion about the "soundboard" source, some claim it's an ALD which would be correct if you'd ask me.

Most you'll hear in this matrix is the (mono) ALD. (The widely circulating version is fake stereo -- that is, one channel was inverted which hurt my ears too much. So I turned it back to mono just like the original recording was.) The excellent audience source was mixed in not too loud because I liked the directness of the ALD. But it did add ambiance, width and, well, audience.

Some screaming, clapping and a few loud pops -- not too often and I don't care about it much.

Overall sound is direct, crisp, slightly agressive and very enjoyable imo.

Comments: Bono begins 'Elevation' by singing 'Oranges, poranges, who says there's no rhyme for oranges?', which is a line from a
song sung by the Witchiepoo character on the old kids TV show H.R. Pufnstuf. Bono references the presence of his wife, Ali,
during Sweetest Thing and The Fly. He sings 10-15 seconds of 'I Walk The Line' after One, and dedicates Walk On to Johnny Cash.

February 21, 1998. Melbourne, Australia. Waverley Park.

Sound Quality:
Good to very good to audience.

Comments:
The instruments are very clear, meaning you can easily distinguish one from
the other (unlike some really "muddy" bootlegs out there) although there is
a little lack of midrange. The cymbals aren't exactly super crisp (I'm
talking bootleg standards here) but are very listenable. The vocals are
ever-so-slightly a bit low side but maybe that's how the acoustics of the
stadium were that night. The sound is a bit on the flat and artificial side
as there seems to be a lack of the audience and stadium atmosphere. Crowd
noise seems to be like random clapping instead of a real stadium audience
thus making it "artificial." Overall, this boot is among the upper echelon
of PopMart audience boots and is recommended. What sets this boot apart from
the other audience PopMart bootlegs is the PopMart version of "Bad," with
snippets of "Never Tear Us Apart," "Walk On The Wild Side" and "All I Want
Is You." During "Discotheque," Bono sang snippets of the Bee Gees' "Stayin'
Alive." This was the second Australian PopMart show. This came from an
audience DAT recording. The front cover is taken from a mini-poster sold
with the Australian 'Mofo' remix single CD. The back cover has pictures of
Bono, Adam, and the arch behind a tracklisting. The inside covers feature
scans of a newspaper review of the concert, a newspaper advertisement for
the show, a concert ticket and a "working personnel" ID pass. Some audience
noise is prominent between songs, but does not distract from the music.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" is the acoustic version sung by The Edge.

Ok.I hope you'll like it.This is a remastered version of a fanstatic show.
I've patched some audio portion(staring at the sun) from an fm broadcast
coming off a dat recording. All sources are lossless.I was not able to
complete "where the streets have no name" because all the recordings
i've listened sound pretty inferior to mine and some were not stereo.
The source here used is superior to any other recording of this show.
I've done my best with my new audio equipment to obtain a
pleasent listening of a great show.

Pimm:

"The final night in Argentina is a killer show.  Gone ends with Bono screaming 'and they will never tear us apart' several times.  After Pride, Bono sings a few bars of Ewan McCall's Dirty Old Town: 'A lot of Irish came to Buenos Aires, this is a song from our town, where we came from.'  Bono segues into a bit of Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side and ends with a part of All I Want Is You.  While Edge is making his way to the B-stage, Bono announces that they are going to play Slow Dancing.  Afterwards, the crowd starts chanting Ole Ole Ole, The Edge, The Edge, The Edge, and the guitarist plays Sunday Bloody Sunday beginning with the "Oh Oh Oh" part of the song.

"At the end of Discotheque Bono sings the first two verses of The Fly and later, during If You Wear That Velvet Dress, he pulls a girl on stage.  She stays with him for With or Without You and they sit together on the steps of the B-stage.  When she's let go, Bono pulls her in for a kiss and the girl sees some serious action.

"Mysterious Ways ends in an extended jam and Bono takes The Edge's hand.  As they try to dance around, they end up tangled up in each other and break up laughing.

"One is dedicated to Jose Luis Cabezas, a photographer for the magazine Noticias in Brazil and a human rights activist.  He was killed in 1997, his body found handcuffed and charrred in a cellar.  He had been shot in the head.

"Once more, the show ends with Mothers of the Disappeared and this time Larry and Adam join in during the second verse."

Pimm tells us:

"To get from Brazil to Argentina, the touring equipment has to pass through a rain forest.  The transport is done by local trucks and on arrival much the material requires repairing.  The big screen barely survives the long trek.

"On February 4, the band visit the Madres de Plaza de Mayo HQ.  They return to their hotel where Bono records W.B. Yeats' poem 'Mother of God' for the Madres' CD 'Ni un Paso Atras.'

"Every country, every people have their ghosts.  Every town and every city there are ghosts and here in this country Argentina there are some ghosts that will not be put to rest till their mothers are at peace.  We welcome Las Madres,' Bono speaks before One, when the band is joined on stage by the 'Madres de Plaza de Mayo.'  They are the women who lost husbands and children to the excesses of the military regime.  While the song is played, the women walk back and forth and finally line up behind the band.  Bono changes the lyrics to:  'Have you come here to play Mary to the lepers in your head.

"Mothers of the Disappeared is played for the first time since Tempe in 1987.  The screens show footage of the women as they marched on Plaza de Mayo.  At the end of the song Bono continues singing 'El pueblo vincera...' and the audience, who have been very quiet during this song, joins in.  Afterwards, they start jumping up and down chanting 'El que no saltar, es militar' ('If you don't jump, you're military'), an anti-army slogan.

"After the song Bono walks to the base of the stage, turns, bows and applauds the mothers.  Larry, at his drum kit, does the same, followed by Edge and Adam.  One of the mothers steps forward, takes Bono's hand and holds it in the air, then takes off her white head scarf and hands it to Bono, who puts it on.  It is an emotional end to the first of three great nights in Argentina."

RE-UP: U2 live in Atlanta 1997 - 2CD - November 26

"Pop Goes The Dome"

11/26/97

This is a recording that I did at the Atlanta Pop-Mart show. Before this I had recorded only one other show and that was REO Speedwagon at the Heart Of IL fair with a mini cassette recorder. The sound wasn't bad but god knows where those tapes went.
Anyway... I recorded this with a Sony Mini Disc recorder borrowed from a friend. They wouldn't let me borrow their mic so I improvised with a Sony Stereo computer mic. The sound is decent overall. I was pretty close up the left side of the stage.

The show was fantastic. If I could have written out a playlist I wanted to hear and handed it to the band before they show they would have matched pretty good. The only thing lacking was some of the Achtung Baby material. Michael Hutchence had committed suicide only a couple of days before and through out the show Bono was calling to him. The big highlight of the evening was 40. Played for the first time in 8 years. It was a great closer brought back to life.

This is an excellent soundboard of a good Popmart show. My guess is this is a pre-ALD or house feed that was tapped for recording. There are
no unnecessary edits, fades, cuts, or missing songs in this show. It is exactly the same version I received. The first leg issues are clearly behind
the band at this point and they put on an excellent show. The stadiums were pretty much half-full for these shows but the band is in good form.
Bono is clearly emotional after the death of Michael Hutchence referencing him with several snippets in this show.

Pimm has not much to say about this concert:

"U2 play an o.k. gig in 'Fat City' Superdome, a building that has very bad acoustics.  Bono dedicates I Still Haven't Found to Daniel Lanois, with whom he says he's had 'good fun in this town,' though Lanois is not at the show."
