Comments:

This version was never shared before. This is an upgrade to the previous versions circulating. This video has
beautiful colours and sound and for those who love popmart tour, this show is great to have in the best possible
 quality.

Irish supergroup kicked off the second leg of its world tour at SkyDome in the middle of Toronto's first
winter storm. The bad weather outside didn't stop the band to deliver a great performance to crowd. A very emotional
show with the band in top form. Some special snippets can be heard during the show like
"Into The Groove" and "Everybody Hurts" By REM at the end of "One".

Note: There's a tiny cut during "One"

A great recording of a dull concert. U2 go through a basic setlist within 90 minutes. On the other hand clarity and crispness of the recording are very good. There are three edits resulting in a second of dead air before "Running To Stand Still", "Pride", and "40". Audience noise is sometimes very audible but things pipe down at the beginning of the songs. The track indexing is somewhat weird because the index is set at the closing notes of the previous song.

Comments:

First of all, this is a pretty nice recording, which sounds a lot better if you EQ it (turn up the treble), but one thing to note is that the taper seems to have been a little nervous, because when the audience gets loud, it sounds like he/she turns down the recording level.  It’s not a huge deal though. This was one of Francesco Donadel’s remasters, supposedly transferred from a first generation cassette.  I don’t know what he did to it exactly but I remember an old version of this I had being a bit rough on the high end (clipping I think), and I think he may have done something about that, but I’m not sure.  What he didn’t do, however, is fix the speed, so I did this, as it was off by about the same amount as most other shows that play too fast.

On this night, U2 performed three Bob Dylan songs, which sounds like a lot except that two of them were done with Bob Dylan himself.  During “Knockin’” Bono mentions coming back and seeing a thousand more bands in the streets, I think this might be referring to the video shoot for Streets, done in LA, but I am not sure. Bono says “You know I usually make up my own words to Bob Dylan songs; he says he doesn’t mind.” Bob says “Hey I do it too.”

Flaws I noticed (all OK):
WTSHNN 1:15-1:18 pop left channel and then tiny miniscule skip
Some skipping in “New Year’s Day” that is also on other versions of the show
A click at "40" at 4:11 on the CDs received by Justin Cook

Of the three gigs the esteemed Brother KM recorded in the spring of 1987, this one would rank third in terms of sound quality, though in listening again today I am impressed with 1) the bass response of the cheap, little Aiwa mic and 2) the passion and enthusiasm of the very vocal crowd. Unlike the night before, there are no notable cuts here though the very beginning of "Maggie's Farm" and "40" are clipped on the master as they are here. In all, a pretty darn good recording from those heady early days of the Joshua Tree tour considering he was sitting two-thirds of the way back.

Apart from the three glitches and the crowd noise it is a fine recording.

Though not at the sublime level of Brother KM's Tempe 4/4/87, this is nonetheless another fine, not widely circulated document of the early stages of the Joshua Tree tour. As the set list reflects, he had some technical difficulties at this show which resulted in the loss of a few songs early on (all grouped together as track 3). Once he regains control at "Bullet the Blue Sky" the rest of the show is intact. I was surprised by how good this recording and show are, definitely a cut above the many average recordings from the tour, though a step below the very best.

Notes : at the start of each tape flip, there are some mic issues with some channel switching
and cutting. Best place to split this up is at New Years Day, as with that tape change, it seems
taper went to slighly inferior tape type (inferred from more hiss) and dropped the levels a bit

When asked about what deck used, back in 1992, she had forgotten when she bought her D3 that year,
and she thought she bought it for the ft.worth shows so this show as well as her early masters on
this tour were done with regular walkman with external mic. But again, even 15 years ago, the taper
herself couldnt remember the equipment. Minerva was not a technie, more just into the shows and
getting them taped however.

With time off last week I traveled north and had the chance to spend an afternoon in the full JEMS archive (not just the piece of the collection I have with me in LA). Inside one of the U2 drawers were two Maxell XL-II cassettes with handwritten notes that read "Las Vegas 4/12/87." J and I were sampling various tapes and when we hit play on this one we were pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Jared did not recognize the handwriting and could not remember where the tapes had come from, but he did recall that it might have come from someone in LA who drove to the show (the other source for the LA '87s that Brother KM did not record?). Back in those days, Jared traded with tapers, not traders, and he was confident he had gotten this from the source.

11. Southern Man (cut short)

There is more than one version of this concert circulating, but as I learned from Frank in Italy, this version is "special" as it includes two songs after "40".  Per Pimm:

"Responding to long applause and an enthusiastic chant of "How long to sing this song", U2 return for an extra encore while the Clannad tape that traditionally ends the show is playing and the house lights are up.  Those making their way through the exits retrace their steps to hear U2 play Trip Through Your Wires and Southern Man."

No doubt the other versions of this one are made by those people who thought the concert had really ended with "40", it's great that someone was still there to get most of the final encore.  The "official" cover art at the archives site does not include the final encore tracks, so yes, we need new cover art.  Again.

This is average quality audience, cdr obtained in trade, unknown lineage:

This was recieved from the late Ed.C Phernetton. Equipment uknown but probably WMD6 with an
excellent mic. The point of releasing this version is to unearth the master tape so it can
be preserved. I suspect the master taper was from the Springsteen/REM community knowing the traders
interests and some samples on the b side of the second tape.

There are some minor speed fluctuations coming off tape pauses.

Second night of the Joshua Tree tour

Disc One
1. Stand By Me intro/Where the Streets Have No Name
2. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
3. Gloria
4. I Will Follow
5. Bullet the Blue Sky
6. Running to Stand Still

9. A Sort of Homecoming

Disc Two
1. Sunday Bloody Sunday
2. Maggie's Farm
3. Bad
4. October
5. With or Without You (first ever version)
6. New Year's Day
7. Pride (In the Name of Love)
8. MLK
9. The Unforgettable Fire
10.  People Get Ready (cuts/restarts)

As noted, the second night of the tour and Bono's voice is failing him, but instead of holding back the malady propels him and the band to an inspired performance. Hard to believe such a "rig" could yield this recording but it did; the remaster was mostly for levels and a touch of sharpening. The show sounds gloriously wide open, translucent and every bit as good as what's being done on this year's tour if not better. Don't let the bit of crowd at the start fool you.

There was a crowd surge to the stage during "People Get Ready" that accidentally shut off the deck, but Brother KM did get most of the song and restarted in time to catch the ending.

The transfer/remaster was done by me a few years ago and some U2 collectors may have this version indirectly (the circulating version appears to be called Back in the Desert), but I see many many inferior versions on lists out there (from the bootlegs Joshua Tree in Flames and Governor Mecham & MLK). This is the real thing from the master cassette and the original remastered CD-R made from it.

Comments [Justin Cook]: This version came from a 1st generation tape put to CDR by Javi Dieguez.  Here are his comments:

First night of the JT tour with a cracked Bono on vocals, short show. This set's not excellent, but still good... it has bass, treble, sounds fairly close. But it has also a bit of hiss and clarity could be better. Anyway, taking into account how bad versions out there for this show are, this is a nice 2 CD set. I put this on CDR from a 1st generation XLII90 using my pro64 soundcard, no processing done besides normalization and smoothing of breaks. I could seamlessly join the beginning of SBS at end of side A of the tape with the entire song at side B.

Sound quality is infinitely better than "The Tour Begins".  This recording is not quite on the same level as "Back In the Desert" (a bootleg documenting the next night's concert), but it's still very good.  There is very little crowd noise and it is relegated entirely to the background.  Bono's vocals (if you can call them that) feature prominently in the mix.  There is a bit of background noise, but it certainly shouldn't cause much concern.

Bono was suffering from throat problems after practicing for much of the previous week in the dry desert air of Arizona.  He croaks "Hello!" during the intro to "Streets" and his singing during the first verse of the song makes you realize that what was arguably U2's best tour started out rather terribly.  By the second verse of "Streets", Edge is obviously singing more than just back up vocals, and the performance improves as a result.  Bono's voice continues to deteriorate throughout the show, but despite the rough vocals it is very interesting to hear some of U2's greatest hits performed live for the first time ever and sounding very raw.

The opening track features Barry Fey, speaking on behalf of the band, unleashing a scathing criticism of Arizona's Governor Meacham, who refused to make Martin Luther King Day a state holiday.

Bono - vocals, guitar
The Edge - guitar, piano, backing vocals
Adam Clayton - bass
Larry Mullen Jr. - drums

This is the very first show from the JT tour, and probably the most unfortunate tour starter of the band's career. Bono's
vocal chords were heavily damaged in addition with already difficult conditions (hot and humid) in Arizona, made his voice
barely listenable right from the beginning of the show. So vocalwide the performance is very poor. As a result of this,
following day's show in the same venue was cancelled and postponed on the 4th. So this is the full 85 minutes set, where
most of the encores, including With or Without You were cut from the setlist. Probably as a thank for the patience during
these two very difficult shows, the band decided to close the JT world tour with two dates in Tempe in december 1987.
Interesting setlist, though.

Soundwise this is good and listenable, although not the best of the quality. My tape was running far too fast, so I tried
to adjust speed according to my ear. I did not touch anything more since I felt that the sound was good enough. I haven't
seen this one circulating, so please enjoy the starter of one of the best tour U2 has ever performed.
