According to the incredible spreadsheet Scott Z compiled for us, the only version of this show was by danafletcher, who said his version was a C, had cuts, etc. Scott's own list has the show from an unknown source and rated an 8.

This version is likely second generation (sorry, my notes are incomplete), and the sound quality is very good though the incredibly boisterous audience does overwhelm in several spots, especially at the start. In fact, the tape runs very hot as the crowd's zeal peaks to distortion on my copy though the actual music never distorts. When the yelling lessens, the underlying recording is quite appealing, clear and full. Samples provided.

I obtained these tapes in 1988. I wish I could tell you who recorded, what gear or even if this is the same source as Dana's or Scott's only closer to source. Perhaps someone can shed some light.

The performance is excellent and the set list topsy turvy (it opens like an UF tour show), which is probably the result of this being the third night of three in the Boston area.

From the same source I also received the previous night, 5/3/87, which I will post as well. A preview sample of that is provided, too.

Butterking for JEMS, happy that the Nakamichi deck is finally fixed and better than ever

special thanks to Mike Duchek for pitch consultation

Mike's comments (3/26/2007)

This was U2's first night in Massachussetts on leg 1 of the Joshua Tree tour, which Bono calls their home away from home, mentioning multiple times their early performances at the Paradise in Boston. This is an otherwise ordinary set, but a pretty nice performance. Bono's voice is pretty strong for this show, and "Bad" and "'40'" both contain some nice vocal interludes as such. As Scott mentions, the taper at two or three times throughout the show can be heard saying something like "This is the Steve Ross Cahill Concert Network," (to me it sounds more like "Rasta Cahill" or something with an extra syllable like that, but his guess is as good as mine) also giving the date of the show. Otherwise aside from an occasionnal person (I think the taper) yelling, this is a nice recording - not quite as crisp as others but very unobstructed and instruments/vocals come through well, and aside from maybe some occasional crowd noise, only a slight part of "In God's Country" is lost at the very beginning, likely due to a tape flip.

As Scott uploaded it, this show played too fast. I slowed it down using a speed/pitch ratio of about .974 for the whole show, and that's pretty close, as it's always hard to get it definitively perfect given the nature of old, analog tapes.

This one is probably for completists only. Really the only reason I can think of to prefer this recording over the other one is that it's complete (well, it has the song that the other recording is missing, more below). I received this from I think merckx who tried to torrent this here but was unsuccessful for some reason. He then sent it to me via one of those file sharing sites like MegaUpload or something. The same person also shared what he was told was a 1st gen cassette of this show, although someone seemed to think that one had torrent restrictions on it, though I don't think that was ever confirmed. This is from, according to what he was told, a 1st gen video (*not* a DVD rip, but audio directly from the VHS), and I am guessing it's likely the same original source for the DVD of this show that is floating around, but if the lineage is correct merckx's video would be a lower gen than the circulating DVD's source.

A few things about the recording: a.) This recording sounds to me like it is more or less in mono. b.) There are dozens of tiny cuts throughout this recording, each of which is a small fraction of a second, but which together add up to kind of an annoyance. There are also larger edits in the first couple songs, as well as maybe a tape switch or something before "Bad" where it sounds like the taper stopped the tape and re-started it. c.) The recording is overall low-fi and thin sounding, but otherwise unobstructed.

So, get the other recording instead of, or at least in addition to, this one. It sounds better, although this is certainly listenable aside from the edits. The big advantage of this one (OK, small advantage) is that this recording has the complete show while the audience recording did not have "Exit."

Anyway, a decent show following the well-known Chicago show, but not as interesting set-wise. During "I Still Haven't Found" Bono gets pissed off I think at a security guard and calls him (or maybe someone else) a monkey in a blue t-shirt. He stops the song and starts it up again with just the Edge. After the song Bono makes some comments about some people having B.O. problems and asks people to move back a little. Throughout the show he seems concerned about calming the crowd down.

Possible names for this could be "Death by 1000 Cuts" given all the annoying edits, or "Bono's B.O. Problem." I prefer the latter.

Comments: Well here is my only U2 personal recording. We were in the
front few rows of the small loge deck (below the upper deck) at about
7:00 o'clock (facing the stage). This was a decent place to record
from at that giant cavern. All of the tape flips resulted in no loss
of music. The crowd was really well behaved right around us...but were
very excited during this terriffic show. All in all a very good
document of that great "Joshua Tree Tour". I used to crank a 2nd gen.
copy in my truck to death back in the day...as I'm a big fan of Edge's
"open" guitar sound.

This recording has never been traded and is uncirculated in it's
complete format. I did give out some copies off of the 1st Generation
Mix that were not complete so as to fit on one 90 minute cassette tape.
That would have been back before 1990. If those somehow made it into
circulation, I am not aware.

I received this tape labeled SBD, not sure if that is 100% accurate.
May actually be FM.  Sounds very nice though.

Comments:

Wow, this is one of the most amazing recordings I have ever heard. The clarity and mix are about perfect, and audience noise is not at all a problem. This is apparently better than "The Joshua Tree on Fire," the pressed bootleg of this show. I noticed, as did another trader, that the bass is a pretty loud. I don't think it detracts from the show, as is the case in other bass-heavy recordings, though it creates a little distortion at a very few times, though not to the extent of other shows.

The set this night was awesome, featuring "Electric. Co.," "Mothers of the Disappeared," and the first concert performance of "Springhill Mining Disaster." Other highlights include an excellent "Bad" and a gutsy "With or Without You" where Bono continued in the higher octave in "nothing to win..." An overall oustanding show and performance, a must-have.
