JUSTIN'S NOTE: This recording rates as one of the poorest bootlegs from the Joshua Tree Tour.  The sound is fairly distant and has a warbling quality that sounds as if someone got a little carried away with a noise reduction feature while trying to remove some background noise.  Neither Bono's vocals nor the band's music is particularly strong in the mix.  When Bono speaks between songs, the sound is so muddy that you will have difficulty making out what he is saying.  On occasion a few individual voices near the taper can be heard. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone other than those in attendance and hard core fans who are looking to fill a hole in their Joshua Tree collections.

"U2 do an extensive soundcheck and rehearse Red Hill Mining Town which they have never performed in concert.  Larry has trouble remembering the drum track and claims he has to listen to the song in order to play it.  She's A Mystery To Me is rehearsed once more but doesn't make it into the set.

This concert is added to the tour itinerary at the very last moment and is U2's first Tennessee show since they supported The J. Geils Band in March, 1982.  While in Tennessee, the band stop by Elvis Presleey's Graceland estate and film their visit for inclusion in the movie.  The experience inspires Bono to sing a quick, acoustic version of the Elvis classic, Can't Help Falling in Love.  The audience sing and sway along to the romatic song.  People Get Ready enjoys another guest appearance.  'From the Judds, you will welcome Wynonna to take my guitar.'  Wynonna plays guitar and sings along but as she doesn't know the lyrics Bono has to guide her through the song.  There are now four days off during which U2 record new tracks at Sun Studios in Memphis."

This is B to B+ audience...and "40" is cut off under a minute into it...

This is an excellent version of the LA soundboard, sourced from the proshot vhs.  This release was put out by Tiger Records.  The Dalton tracks are excellent audience quality...it's pretty funny to hear crowd members shouting "You Suck!" and "Get the hell off the stage!" never knowing it's actually U2.  Once they start playing/singing it's pretty obvious IMO that it's U2.

JUSTIN'S NOTE:  I converted this recording from cassette to CDR.  Sound quality is decent, but clarity could be better.  The guitars and vocals come through pretty well, but Larry's cymbals sound quite flat.  On a few occasions, differences in quality can be audibly detected - such as between the end of "Trip Through Your Wires" and the beginning of "I Still Haven't Found".  Audience noise is present, and individual voices can be heard from time to time.  There are a couple of skips during the recording: one at 0:39 of "Bad", a second at 4:35  of "With Or Without You" and another at 2:30 of "40".  This is certainly not a perfect recording, but it does document a Joshua Tree concert that is very difficult to find on CDR.

Notes:
To the best of our knowledge, JEMS masters of the two Oakland Stadium shows on the Joshua Tree tour have never been widely circulated and with good reason. There are two other outstanding recordings of both shows, one set by our Taper Hall of Fame friend Mark Persic, and the other early digital masters done in the Sony PCM-F1 system with a portable Beta video recorder. Given that we just didn't bother but in the spirit of completeness we're offering them here. Amusingly, JEMS itself made two master recordings of the second show. I remember coming away from Oakland thinking it was one of the better stadium recordings I had ever made (I also recall beating a patdown search by strapping the D6 to my upper arm), only to find out it had been done even better by others. Anyway, we offer them both to you as our U2 shelf-clearing exercises continue.

11/7/87
"Mountains and Deserts Platinum Ed"
remastered by currygoat11 - 1/11/04

source: SBD (allegedly from vid outtakes from Rattle & Hum)

Notes:
11/7/87 is arguably the best SBD Joshua show. There are several different productions of this recording (Enjoy, Mountains in a Blue Sky, Mountains and Deserts Remastered, Caught On 35mm, etc). Well, this version (Platinum Ed) is the cream of the crop in my opinion.

This version was remastered directly from a copy of Mountains and Deserts.

Most improvements include: removal of oodles of clicks and pops, smooth transition between tracks where possible, patching in a couple of missing seconds in October, making Star Spangled Banner its own track, better equalization of "40". There's a peak of treble at ~15,800Hz. This is normally not a problem whatsoever unless you crank your treble up (which you shouldn't do!). I ended up not removing this band of treble.

Most people have different opinions on which version of 11/7/87 is the "best"; "Mountains and Deserts Remastered" is very good; well this is my interpretation of the best; if you don't find it to your liking, you can always just delete it now can't you?

Truly, a grade A+ full-show SBD recording from the Joshua Tree tour - can't go wrong with this.

NEW: U2 live in St. Paul 1987 - 2CD - November 4

1987-11-04 Saint Paul Civic Center - Saint Paul, Minnesota
Unknown source and lineage, CDR received in trade.

On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, this rates a 3.  I consider this an average recording at best.  It has moments of good clarity, but it can switch quickly to a rather muddy sound.  It's as if the taper kept walking behind some large object that obscured the sound (or covered the mic for some reason).  There is some hiss evident at higher volumes.  Track 11 of disc 1 is missing the first minute or so and was apparently edited to fade at the end.  Likewise, track 8 of disc 2 fades at the end, while track 9 of disc 2 sounds like it was taken from a completely different recording (although spectral and frequency analysis match between d2t09 and the rest of the tracks [early levelling with an odd spike at 16KHz]).

That said, when it sounds good, it sounds very good.  Bad is executed particularly well, and Bono generally seems to connect with the crowd.  I've heard unconfirmed rumors that the 11/3 and 11/4 dates in St. Paul were the first completely sold-out shows for U2.

NOTE:  I converted this show from cassette to CDR.  The sound is very clear and there are virtually no flaws in the recording.  The only setback is that the acoustics in the Hoosier Dome leave something to be desired.  Crowd noise is evident but could be a great deal worse.  When you're dealing with recordings that are this rare you have to be willing to accept a few screams every once in a while.
