Manufacture : Cupido

Quality     : Very good audience recording

There's a different version of this date still active, but I decided to seed it anyway.
The other one is not much better.

Well, my first U2 concert and it's the one where Bono had voice problems. The concert was
Ok en I think Bono was really pissed off when his voice let him down. The two other
additional shows (19th & 20th Dec) were also cancelled and the band announced 4 new shows
after the new year in Rotterdam. The concert organisator (Mojo) said to keep the tickets
for a new show, but that was not the case.

Well if you had tickets for the cancelled show of the 19th Dec 1989, you could changed it
for the 5th or 6th of Jan 1990. If you had tickets for the 20th, you could change it for
the 9th or 10th Jan 1990. The ticket holders who attended the original 1st show (Dec 18th)
were not able to get any tickets. But later the stage could move more to the back, a few
2000 tickets came available over the 4 nights. So that was a lottery and the people who
were left out got their money back. So I got my money back but luckly I obtained tickets
for the 1st show in R'dam via an advert in the newspaper.

A+/A++ Audience

Comments:

This is a new recording of the Amsterdam LoveTown show, different from the recording Amsterdam XXX LoveTown. I have seen people consistently rate this version higher, but I think that is mainly because there is much less audience noise and, to be honest, probably just because it is a newer recording so people feel obligated to rate it higher to justify it (just my theory). While it is an excellent, above par, recording with a nice mix and low audience noise, it does not sound as good as the other version at FLOM, which is almost as good as the 1/10/90 recording. "God Part II" begins edited in a second or two, otherwise this is a complete show, clocking in just over 72 minutes. This is, by the way, the show where Bono's range died, and the B.B. King encore went unplayed, resulting in this show being free. It was later "made up" to fans with the four shows in Rotterdam a few weeks later. The bottom line: if you don't mind a few bad singers and a sometimes loud audience noise, go with the other recording, this one is definitely not as good in my opinion. This is from a D3 master and includes a full version of "Hawkmoon 269."

comment:
Poor Bono ! He struggled with his voice and gave his best. In the end everyone got his money back. So it was a 75 min -free-show.

Last performance of Hawkmoon 269, and its only performance outside Australia. This concert came to a premature close due to serious problems with Bono's voice that were especially manifested in God Part II. Concerts for the next two nights were cancelled and four replacement shows were performed early in January 1990 in Rotterdam. Due to the premature conclusion of the show, the usual encore with BB King and his band was not played, and accordingly this is the only Lovetown gig at which Angel Of Harlem, When Love Comes To Town, and Love Rescue Me were not performed.

SMILE JAMAICA BENEFIT CONCERT
Dominion Theater.
London, 16.10.1988

1 - All allong the watchtower
2 - Angel of Harlem
3 - When love comes to town (with Keith Richards)
4 - Love rescue me (with Ziggy Marley)

After rumors and speculation, U2 make a special 16 minute appearance at the Smile Jamaica benefit concert for the victims of Hurricane Gilbert, which destroyed one out of every five homes in Jamaica.
This is U2's only official concert of 1988 and for the first time since February 1985 they play for a small crowd of 2,500.
U2 are the last on the bill and start with All Along the Watchtower in an arrangement similar to Rattle and Hum.
The first live performance of Angel of Harlem contains horns by the Rumor Horn Section.
At the start of When Love Comes to Town, Bono wails, "Where's my mate, Keith Richards?"  Keith is already on stage adjusting his guitar strap and throughout the song
adds extensive guitar solos wherever he can.  He stays onstage for Love Rescue Me, during which Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, who performed earlier, join in to sing a verse.
The crowd sing "How long to sing this song" when U2 have left the stage.
All the proceeds from the song are donated to the Smile Jamaica Fund.

I have left the song '40' on at the end, however it might have been added at the end
of the tape from another show, it just doesn't sound like the same source as the rest
of the tape. Apart from that this is a very good audience recording.

I really had problems remastering this one, so i'm not really happy with it coz the sound was so special.
Originaly from a vynil sourced bootleg (you can hear some scratches occasionaly), this is a
good audience recording but the big problem with it is that the guitar sounds aggressivly fuzzy,
sometimes, it becames irritating. On Pride and 40, the sound seems a little bit used, this
vynil was not a great quality vynil (seeing this one in record fair at +/- 35€ makes me laugh...)
anyway, a very good show with a band really into it.

Notes (from Erik of JEMS):

In 1990-91, JEMS did a few trades with a taper/collector called Frank Reilman in Gronigen, The Netherlands. (Perhaps he is a member of U2 Torrents today). From Frank we obtained copies of every European show on the Lovetown tour save for the Dublin shows. From us he got several of the Joshua Tree masters that have been posted here this year.

Many of the cassettes we received from Frank are marked "first generation" and we have never transfered them until now. Rooting around in the archive this past weekend I found some of Frank's original letters and lists. On the first list he has about half of the Euro Lovetown shows and he notes them as being anywhere from master to second generation. On a subsequent list he has every show and notes them all as masters--in his letter he wrote that they were all recorded by "me or friends of mine."

It is a fine recording but something of a strange one. The copy I got from Frank is on one 90 minute metal tape and one side of a 60 minute chrome tape but the cuts/flips on the master don't match that configuration at all. There are fade out and fade ins done on my tapes that clearly aren't on the master and more hiss than master transfer should have. Another curious detail: the pre-show music is recorded for several minutes.

Judging from the sound when the tape sides start, this is not off the master but a copy of something that had been edited already. I can't 100% guarantee it is a second gen. but I think there is aural and printed evidence to support that. Listen to the samples below.

Justin's website notes the following [about Soctt's version]: "I received this recording from Scott Zumsteg, webmaster of The Joshua Tree Tour Preservation Project web site. Those of you who have traded with Scott know that he only works with top notch recordings. Here are his comments regarding this one: "This is pressed from a 2nd generation D6 recording and this is a really nice show. Great inspired versions of the songs and clean sound throughout." The only major problem of note is that approximately the first two minutes of "40" are omitted and the song cuts off prematurely. Otherwise, this is a near perfect bootleg with outstanding sound quality and clarity."

"40" is complete on my tape so this is definitely not the tape he is referring to.

Notes (from Mike):

As Erik refers to, the only other recording of this show I have is one that was posted here in the last couple months, Scott Z's source, which also ran a tad slow I believe. That one had "40" cut out early and another cut I can't remember (maybe before "I Still Haven't Found?"). This one is a different source (***YES, I am pretty sure this is a different taper and equipment***), although it actually sounds kind of similar. Anyway, I think this one probably has more bass than Scott's source, and is certainly very close and clear. The drawback is the sound is a tad washy or warbly, moreso than Scott's source, something which sounds like it's because it's from old, supposedly second-gen cassettes.

So, I received this as a big WAV file and put it through Goldwave to adjust the speed slightly. It was a bit slow and I sped it up, and then split it into tracks. Nothing else has been done to this recording.

Anyway, this one is probably slightly more complete than Scott's source, although for sure there are cuts here and there mostly probably due to tape flips, first before "MLK" (little or no music lost) and before "Love Rescue Me" (again little or no music lost).

Notes on the show:

1. During a nice, somewhat extended "All I Want is You" and a great "Bad" Bono sings a few lines I don't recognize, except for one, "ain't love the sweetest thing." I think these are probably improvs ("oh Majula?"), so I wouldn't call it a snippet of "Sweetest Thing" (first released in 1987), but it might be an early reference to the song re-released some ten years later.

2. Speaking of "Bad," some great guitar at the end. Bono also starts the song off with "Help" after the sequencer as started (a little different from what he usually did).

3. This is one of only a few performances I have heard where Bono sings "maybe the time is right, maybe tonight" line in "New Year's Day." I don't have as many recordings as some people here, but this is one of only three shows I have where he does this.

4. "Angel of Harlem" had a bit of "Suspicious Minds" at the end again.

GodfatheRecords kissed the devil in the fire of hell with its two previous bootlegs of U2 "Forever in Fever, Forever in Heat" & "New Voices of Freedom".
It looks obvious than both were coming from Wolgang's Vault ripped streams (Despite a lossless spectral analysis) of the "1987-09-18, Boston Garden, Boston, USA" & "1987-09-28, Madison Square Garden, New York, USA" shows.
This time, back to an excellent audience recording.
You can download this show without reserve: great show, great performance & great bonus...
Concerning the sound quality, It deserves a rating of 4,75 Stars.

This is a good audience recording of a slightly down performance.
Someone seems to have bought his way into the front row and is being
decidedly uncool. At one point Bono says to the others (on mic),
"one more stunt like that and he's fuckin' outta here, I mean it."
The band's energy level is really low until B.B. King comes on for
Angel of Harlem. Things pick up at that point and at the end of the
show Bono even forgives the front row guy. He also reveals who ended
the cold war during the intro to Love Rescue Me.

The title is incorrect, this isn't the November 23, 1989 Yokohama
show. At the end of Slow Dancing and also during the lead-in to "40"
Bono indicates that it's the last night of the Far East leg of the
tour which makes it the December 1, 1989 concert.

Sound Quality:
Excellent audience.

Comments:
B.B. King appears on Tracks 5-7 of Disc 2. Bono gets pissed off at some over zealous members of the audience
by saying, "If you can not live together in here, then you can not live together out there, let me tell ya".
Bono introduces "Slow Dancing", as a song he wrote for Willie Nelson, by saying, "we've never played this
song before, so..." This 2CD set is identical in content to FREEDOM OF THE SPIRITS from an unknown
manufacturer. I've never heard the other pressing, but I assume sound quality is the same for both.
This is one of two of the original pressings on this label.

Audio is okay. Had to increase, bass, the works, sound was tinny.

For now, enjoy this incomplete "remastered" version.

1st Generation

As luck would have it, I managed to locate a great tape trading partner in Japan (S.K. - through Goldmine), who taped shows as well.  This guy was a real find, his recordings were of the highest quality and he had a number of other contacts in Japan who had some older shows.  I traded with him for close to 10 years until he told me he was getting out of the hobby all together ... that was a sad day indeed.  The only drawback to trading with him is that it often took months from when I sent him his tapes and my requests, to actually getting my tapes… small price really for the rare and superior sounding shows I got from him. Lots of top-notch video too, so if anyone could tell me how I go about moving my VHS tapes to my pc, I could share some great 1st gen video from Japan as well ...

This is one of the shows he taped himself ... a great sounding U2 from the Love Town tour.  Simply stated, it is fantastic quality, even more so when you consider it's over 20 years old ...

Tape flips are noticeable but nothing is missing.  Weird cut after Bono introduces the BB King Orchestra before Angel Of Harlem though ... after he introduces Walter, there was some silence on the tape (which I edited out) then Angel starts ... not sure what happened there but nothing is missing really ...

Not so difficult as the 11-26 cassette. Sound much better. A couple of cuts in audio required merging. Most are seamless, a few are noticeable if you are paying close attention. Particularily from All I Want Is you to Van Diemen's Land and from People get Ready to Angel of Harlem. There's just no way around those two. I think the taper was moving around the venue which would explain the original audio cuts. Limited bass amplification applied to each track.

NOTE: "Bad" is missing

This is an interview on Triple M Radio in Sydney with all 4. It was recorded from air, obviously, but I made no note of where I got it. The sound could certainly be better, but very listenable. I rated it a 7 on the FM scale. They telescoped some of the music out.

U2
BBC Radio 1: Interview with Bono and Adam
August, 19, 1981

Bono and Adam were interviewed by David Jensen (probably). They talked about:

- U2's origins (too bad to play cover versions, started in a car park),
- no move to London, their roots are in Dublin,
- breakthrough in the USA before their success in Britain,
- follow up album "October",
- the song "Fire",
- the forthcoming British tour in autumn.

There is hiss on the recording. The quality is still okay.

NEW: U2 live in Sydney 1989 - 2CD - November 18 - source #3

U2
18 November 1989
Entertainment Centre, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

*Although I am not certain of how close my CDRs are to the master, the sound is crisp and I would presume it is from the master or a low generation source.

Quality: It is my opinion that this is a very good quality audience bootleg for the Australian leg of the Lovetown Tour.  There is static during When Love Comes To Town.

Setlist:

CD1
1. Evacuation announcement (See concert details below)
2. Hawkmoon 269
3. Desire
4. All Along The Watchtower
5. All I Want Is You
6. God Part II
7. Bullet The Blue Sky
8. Running To Stand Still

CD2
1. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
2. Bad
3. Van Diemen's Land
4. New Year's Day
5. Pride (In The Name Of Love)
6. Angel Of Harlem
7. When Love Comes To Town
8. Angel Of Harlem
9. 40
(CD2 Tracks 6-8 are with BB King and his band.)

Concert details:
On the first leg of the Lovetown Tour, U2 had to cancel a number of shows in Sydney, Australia's largest city, after Bono fell ill and had vocal troubles.  These shows were rescheduled to be played after U2's four in New Zealand, and this particular show is one of the rescheduled dates.  Circumstances continued to attempt to conspire against the show ever being played, as the police received a bomb threat and had to evacuate the entire venue before showtime.  Luckily, no bomb was found, the band took the stage, and the concert was not only played safely, it was played sensationally.  Portions of this concert can be seen on the Lovetown Documentary that was broadcast on some television stations and is widely bootlegged.

Notable setlist elements:
- Very rare omission of Where The Streets Have No Name.
- Last time U2 played Hawkmoon 269 in Australia.  Second-to-last Hawkmoon 269 ever.  All eight performances of Hawkmoon 269 were as the concert opener and seven of these were in Australia.  The last was on 18 December 1989 in Amsterdam.

There was a bomb threat before the show and all of the 12.000 visitors were asked to leave the building. You can hear this on
track 1 on disc 1. After being readmitted the audience saw one of the best shows from this tour.

"Knocking On Heaven's Door" had improvised lyrics, citing the Berlin wall coming down and the city of Sydney.

02 jamming (1:35)
03 unknown (6:48)
04 unknown (3:27)

The recording is incomplete. The last track cuts off. The full setlist of the soundcheck was:

Slow Dancing/ Two Hearts Beat As One/ unknown/ unknown/ Where The Streets Have No Name/ Bad

The most important songs of the soundcheck are available. I have never seen a complete copy of this soundcheck in circulation.
I only got Slow Dancing as a first copy from the taper. I received the two unknown songs in a trade 20 years ago.

Track 3 is "Going Down South" from the "Berlin demos" which is an early version of the bridge in "Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around
The World". I have no idea about track 4.

The quality is poor. It was a windy day in Auckland on November 11th in 1989 and this soundcheck was probably recorded from outside
the venue. The taper did not record the show (I don't know the reason for it).

AUDIENCE RECORDING

1. Unknown song
2. Unknown song

Recordind could be good if there was not not this wind that completly ruins the sound.  It was impossible to remove this annoying sound.  Too bad, the two songs rehearsed are particullary intertesting.  I suppose it the same taper who taped the incomplete show the night before.

First song can be found in instrumental form in the achtung baby stole tapes rehearsals but bono added lyrics on it during this soundchek.
