NEW: U2 live in Sydney 1989 - 2CD - November 18 - source #3

U2
18 November 1989
Entertainment Centre, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

*Although I am not certain of how close my CDRs are to the master, the sound is crisp and I would presume it is from the master or a low generation source.

Quality: It is my opinion that this is a very good quality audience bootleg for the Australian leg of the Lovetown Tour.  There is static during When Love Comes To Town.

(CD2 Tracks 6-8 are with BB King and his band.)

Concert details:
On the first leg of the Lovetown Tour, U2 had to cancel a number of shows in Sydney, Australia's largest city, after Bono fell ill and had vocal troubles.  These shows were rescheduled to be played after U2's four in New Zealand, and this particular show is one of the rescheduled dates.  Circumstances continued to attempt to conspire against the show ever being played, as the police received a bomb threat and had to evacuate the entire venue before showtime.  Luckily, no bomb was found, the band took the stage, and the concert was not only played safely, it was played sensationally.  Portions of this concert can be seen on the Lovetown Documentary that was broadcast on some television stations and is widely bootlegged.

Notable setlist elements:
- Very rare omission of Where The Streets Have No Name.
- Last time U2 played Hawkmoon 269 in Australia.  Second-to-last Hawkmoon 269 ever.  All eight performances of Hawkmoon 269 were as the concert opener and seven of these were in Australia.  The last was on 18 December 1989 in Amsterdam.

There was a bomb threat before the show and all of the 12.000 visitors were asked to leave the building. You can hear this on
track 1 on disc 1. After being readmitted the audience saw one of the best shows from this tour.

"Knocking On Heaven's Door" had improvised lyrics, citing the Berlin wall coming down and the city of Sydney.

(17:317
01 Slow Dancing (5:23)
02 jamming (1:35)
03 unknown (6:48)
04 unknown (3:27)

The recording is incomplete. The last track cuts off. The full setlist of the soundcheck was:

Slow Dancing/ Two Hearts Beat As One/ unknown/ unknown/ Where The Streets Have No Name/ Bad

The most important songs of the soundcheck are available. I have never seen a complete copy of this soundcheck in circulation.
I only got Slow Dancing as a first copy from the taper. I received the two unknown songs in a trade 20 years ago.

Track 3 is "Going Down South" from the "Berlin demos" which is an early version of the bridge in "Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around
The World". I have no idea about track 4.

The quality is poor. It was a windy day in Auckland on November 11th in 1989 and this soundcheck was probably recorded from outside
the venue. The taper did not record the show (I don't know the reason for it).

1. Unknown song
2. Unknown song

Recordind could be good if there was not not this wind that completly ruins the sound.  It was impossible to remove this annoying sound.  Too bad, the two songs rehearsed are particullary intertesting.  I suppose it the same taper who taped the incomplete show the night before.

First song can be found in instrumental form in the achtung baby stole tapes rehearsals but bono added lyrics on it during this soundchek.

"People are squashed in the rough crowd and just prior to the show U2's production manager Steve Iredale comes onstage to stress that before the band will come on, everyone must take a step back.  Several times throughout the show, Bono asks the crowd to take it easy to look after each other.  After Pride the band go backstage, Bono excuses himself, "Sorry, I have to take a piss!"

Here is a nice tape I got from my friend Sam. He told me he got this straight from the taper. Sound is pretty good, I would say very good to excellent audience. Audience chatter can be heard from time to time but its not really distracting.

I sent the tape to boyacrobat/George who then converted it to wav and did some remastering.

NEW: U2 live in Christchurch 1989 - 2CD - November 4 - source #3

U2 Christchurch 4th of November 1989 - Remastered

Unknown tape source, unknown generation, sourced from tape trade.
Sound is a little distant but clear.

On 4th of November 1989 U2 played a show to the biggist audience ever
assembled in Christchurch, 60 000 people gathered in Lancaster Park
stadium, which now is called "Jade Stadium". U2 was on one of their
shorter tours, the 1989 -1990 Lovetown tour, which mostly was a
continuation of the 1987 Joshua Tree Tour, covering the Pacific Rim,
ending in Europe with the famous New Years Night show from Dublin and
a few other European stops.

I downloaded this originally from U2torrents.com
The channel imbalance of this stereo recording became apparent immediately,
with one channel running at about half the volume of the other. When trying
to fix this I also discovered that left and right channels had been swaped
three times over the course of the show. I rectified this before re-combining
all tracks into one wave, then channel balancing and normalizing the entire
show in one run with Cooledit Pro. When re-cutting the tracks I started each
track with the actual music, not with the banter preceding each song.
A gap at the beginning of track one from the original torrent is also fixed.
I also created the artwork included.

not a brilliant recording, clear apart from "streets" which is quite
muffled, and has a short drop out after about 10 secs .
it sounds like it was recorded
from some distance. There is some channel imbalance but i have not
attempted any eq/adjustment at all.

3. New Year's Day
4. Pride (In The Name Of Love)
5. Angel Of Harlem
6. When Love Comes To Town
7. Love Rescue Me

NOTE: The sound is somewhat distant and clarity could be better.  While definitely not one of the better audience recordings from the Lovetown Tour, this bootleg is certainly listenable.  There is an obvious edit between "One Tree Hill" and "People Get Ready" and between the main set and the encore.  Approximately the first 30 seconds of "Bad" are lost at the beginning of Disc 2.  There is a recurring ticking noise during the end of "Pride" and the first half of "Angel of Harlem" and a high-pitched whining noise between the songs.  According to U2 Live: A Concert Documentary, "With Or Without You" and "40" were played at this concert...they are not included on this bootleg.

Comments: This recording misses somewhat the clarity and crispness necessary to become a good or better rating. Maybe if it was transferred from a lower generation tape the background noise level would be lower and clarity or crispness significantly better. Anyway, it is still far from being annoying and a nice find for a collector of rare Lovetown material.

The sound is not the best, but it is clear.  Hiss is evident at all volumes.  The last second of disc 1 track 10 finishes at the very beginning of the following track with a sudden cut at that point.  The same thing happens on disc 2 tracks 5 and 6 with both tracks starting with an apparent cut.  The audience is prevalent throughout but not bad during songs for the most part, with a couple of extremely irritating banshees close to the taper.  No clicks or pops noticed during any of the tracks.

On the plus side, it's a fun performance.  U2 is still young and on top of the world (or down under it as the case may be).  The music is not muffled or weak, the singing is close, if it had more bass and less banshee it would be good.

Comments :

I just watched the complete DVD, and I hate to say this, but this is not the complete San Francisco show.

The first two songs, C'Mon Everybody and Pride, and Sun City at the end are from San Francisco,
but the rest of the tape is from a different show (maybe Chicago?).

The next two songs after Pride should have been New year's day and Sunday Bloody Sunday, but they're missing here.
Instead, the next U2 number (after Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" inexplicably appears in the middle of U2's set) is Maggie's Farm.

Both Bono and Larry are wearing different shirts than what they were wearing during the first two songs.
I sat in the tenth row for this gig and definitely don't remember seeing Bono and Larry doing costume changes halfway through their set.

Also, during Maggie's Farm, Bono stands on a monitor wearing a blindfold... he didn't do that in SF, as far as I recall.

There is also a reel-to-reel tape recorder visible behind Edge in the non-SF clips, while it is not visible in the three SF songs.

However, Sun City is from the SF show. One can tell by Bono saying "come on SF" at the beginning of the song,
and by the fact that he is wearing the same leather Daniel Boone shirt he wears in the first two songs of the DVD.

In addition, the clips of Sting doing Roxanne and Message In A Bottle show him playing with Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland.
I definitely would have remembered a Police reunion if it happened in SF, but it didn't. Sting played a slow version of Message In A Bottle
in SF, if I remember correctly, not the fast version shown here.

Finally, the clip of I Shall Be Released with everyone onstage at the end showed Bob Geldof, Joni Mitchell and Don Henley (?)
among the many performers. Again, I don't remember seeing them at the SF show, and I think I would've noticed if they were there.

Besides, I don't remember them doing I Shall Be Released at the end anyway, it was Sun City that ended the show.

NOTE (from Justin Cook's site):
Darren Glen put in numerous hours at the studio remastering this bootleg, using "Lovetown
Melbourne - Night Three" as his primary source material. The result is outstanding. Again,
crowd noise is present--there is no way to eliminate that--but the vocals are at the
forefront and all of the instruments can be clearly heard. This is definitely one of the
best first leg Loevtown recordings available. It is infinitely better than any of the other
bootlegs of this concert that I have heard.

This is the final soundcheck recording of the "Melbourne Lovetown soundchecks". There are less songs than on the
other two soundchecks but I don't regard this one as boring. The exact line up of this soundcheck is unknown. Bono
is not present and it is possible that some of the other recordings were played by the technicians, too but it is
believed that Edge was still very active in soundchecking those days.

Commetns Justin Cook:
Darren Glen put in numerous hours at the studio remastering this bootleg, using "Lovetown Melbourne -
Night Two" as his primary source material. The result is outstanding. Again, crowd noise is present--
there is no way to eliminate that--but the vocals are at the forefront and all of the
instruments can be clearly heard. This is definitely one of the best first leg Loevtown recordings available.
It is infinitely better than "Tonight I Feel Drunk" and personally, I like it better than the raw sound offered in "Lovetown Melbourne -
Night Two."

Comments Darren Glen:
There are three different recordings of this show in the archive, all from different positions within the arena and with different equipment.
By far the best recording was probably a transfer to CDR from the original source tape...this version sounds like it was recorded with excellent mics and to a recording unit that wasnt plagued with AUTO GAIN which is good, as this allows the recording to retain excellent punch and dynamics. However I imagine that the mics used were not flat in response, leaving the sound seriously lacking in bottom end, and with a fairly harsh top end, and the recording was playing at the wrong speed (too fast). Unfortunately this recording was also missing 3 1/2 songs....but half of "I Will Follow" remained. All of these anomalities were corrected and the frequency balance restored to a full, clean and tight response.
The second recording was from a different location and using less superior equipment, but fortunately the missing songs from the better version above were in complete form here. This show was on a first generation TDK SA tape and was fully restored (NR, EQ, Speed Adj, etc) before the missing songs were re-balanced and slotted into the above recording in the correct position to make a complete recording for the project...entitled "Bad at its Best"...this is without a doubt the most incredible performance of BAD in the archive....and better than any of the versions of BAD from 87 shows i've heard as well. Bonos voice roars as he puts all of the singing phrases that he uses individually in different versions of BAD all into this one performance, and flawlessly. He ends up singing in all 3 sections right to the very end of the song just to fit them all in, instead of leaving the last section an instrumental as is usually the case. (This extension only happened one other time, in Tokyo.)

this was a project i wanted to do from long ago, lovetown melb/syd matrixes , wondering what it would be like, it had to many hurdles for me to jump
ike fluctuating bpm between the 2 sources , pitch climbing, diving quiet a bit . it was a nightmare to work with.
i could not do it, i left it for the future, pending my wav acrobatics getting good enough for me to be able to jump all hurdles involved.
time sorted me out to be able to develop the skills to put this together, quiet a little effort to merge this was.
the tuning  on source 1 was to erratic to deal with on its own, chromatic tuning of source 1 only to bring it to the tuning of source 2,
source 2 is still slightly off concert pitch, but not at all as bad as source 1.

both rec run at 50/50 ratio , i eq the two sources while both playing to bring out the best of both .
merging the two was quiet fun because of the different soundscapes both offer together.
i know this show quiet well and the two together created a tone quiet pleasing to me, it also gave the rec some
reall ambience that the two on there own lacked.
this may not be for everyone but its a gold brick for me, i love it..

The photocopy of the ticket says "Upper HH 570 enter door 17". I think the recording position was:

Upper grandstand, section HH, seat 570

The recording is not complete. The taper went to the venue with two C-90 tapes in the afternoon and was able to record the soundcheck
(without expecting this before). There was only C-90 tape left after the soundcheck. To capture nearly all of the songs the tape flip
was too late and People Get Ready is incomplete. There are cuts between Bad/October, New Year's Day/Pride, Pride/Angel Of Harlem, When
Love Comes To Town/Love Rescue Me, Love Rescue Me/Bullet The Blue Sky and Running To Stand Still/With Or Without You to save some tape.

Per Pimm:

"In 1984 U2 played five concerts in Melbourne, this time it's seven in a venue twice as big.  At first only two shows are cautiously put on sale, then another three, and another two as ticket demand seems inexhaustible.  An eighth show for October 17 is printed in the official tour book but does not take place.  Bono dedicates Bad to a friend of the band who should have attended the show but has died in a car crash.  During Running to Stand Still Bono subsitutes the line 'step out of the driving rain' with 'can't get me no jet plane', referring to a pilots' strike which has thrown Australian air travel into chaos.  At the end of the song he sings a brief chorus of Waltzing Matilda, which the audience finish for him."

Comments: This recording lacks somewhat the clarity and crispness to get a good or higher rating. The music and the vocals sound a bit distanced and
a slight hiss is audible in the background as is a slight distorsion. Also audience noise is a bit intrusive during the opening songs but the music
maximizes until "The Unforgettable Fire". Despite this points of critisism I can recommend this bootleg to colletors of Lovetown recordings since not
many versions of this concert are floating around!

The quality is consistant with the 6.5/7 marks I have seen on some
trading sites and like some of the notes there, this tape does
have a few glitches where possibly other buttons were pressed on
the recorder when recording so the tape appears to speed up for a
couple of seconds. This would lead to the impression that it came
from the original source.

NOTE:  I transferred this recording from cassette to CDR.  As with most recordings that were originally on cassette, there are a few problems.  From time to time slight increases or decreases in the volume can be detected.  These are never really major enough to be considered "dropouts", but to say that the volume remains perfectly even throughout would not be an honest assesment of the recording.  Also, there are a few "pops" every now and then, including several between tracks.  Again, this is a very minor annoyance, but some people freak out about this type of thing.  Audience noise isn't much of a problem and sound quality is fairly high given that the show was transferred from analog.

This is another tape that I really have no idea where it came from. This consists of more noodling then complete songs. Some of the bits sound very familiar but I couldn't put titles to them. Any help would be appreciated from one of you U2 guru's out there.

NEW: U2 live in Perth 1989 - 2CD - September 23 - source #1

U2
Perth, Austrlia
Entertainment Center
September 23, 1989

Recorded with some sort of non professional deck and a external mic that had a high and low sensitivity setting

1. In Gods Country
2. All Along the Watchtower
3. Bullet the Blue Sky
4. Running to Stand Still
5. All I want Is You
6. Where the Streets Have no Name
7. I Will Follow
8. Still Havent Found
9. People Get Ready
10. Bad
11. With or Without you
12. God PT II
13. Desire
14. New Years Day
15. Pride
16. Angel of Harlem
17. When Love Comes to town
18. Love Rescue me

Note : This tape has a flaw in that at the beggining of God PT II the taper flips a switch on her mic or deck that brings the recording level
down. I normalized this out but it adds hiss to the later part of the show. This show does not to seem to have the speed issues as severly
as the first night in Perth
